Mary Alice Cornell Humes

I will not be attending the reunion.

After high school, I married a Navy man and lived in many locations in the U.S. Our son was born at China Lake Naval Air Station, CA 1976. We divorced in 1987 and my son and I moved to Las Vegas, NV. During the next 17 years in Las Vegas, I raised my wonderful son, worked as a government contractor, finally finished my BS in 2001, and earned a Masters in Database Technology from Regis University in 2004. Then I left family and friends to work on another government contract in Iraq for two years.
During my R&Rs from Iraq, I was able to travel in Europe, including a road trip around the UK with my brother, a beach vacation with my son in Spain, and a Mediterranean cruise with my son and his friend.
For the next eight years I worked as a government contractor in Martinsburg, WV. I retired in 2014 and moved back to Las Vegas to be near family. I am now having a wonderful time with my son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons (ages 8 & 2) and occasionally fostering baby kittens. I like retirement.

I don't have a lot of memories from high school except for having fun with my friends in the BTUs. Oh yes, I do have a high school memory...I wrote a poem. I wrote parody. My teacher didn't like it. I did and still do. Here it is:
I think that I shall never see
A mode as sick as poetry.
It grinds my soul to think that I'm
A person who can't make a rhyme.
The tangled web of metaphors
Is something that my mind abhors.
It isn't really very nice
To have to read poem twice
To understand the meaning once
It makes me feel like such a dunce.
Prose is written by fools like me
But only nuts write poetry.

I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school. I went to Bridgewater College in VA for a short time, went back to my parents' house, worked in Cleveland for a year or so, attended Outward Bound in MN, went to Washington, DC to be Nancy Hirschell Brown's roommate and work as a clerk for a lobbyist. I met my husband in DC, got married, and started my adult life. See the first question for the rest.

Some days very old and other days I cannot reconcile-my age with the person I am. Lots of grey hair!

That I turned out more adventurous than was probably expected of me in high school.
